Beta blockers are also known as beta-adrenergic blocking agents, these are used to treat a variety of conditions like high blood pressure, glaucoma and migraines. These were initially developed to treat patients with high blood pressure but have been found to be effective in the stoppage of migraines. Beta blockers work by hindering the effects of the hormone epinephrine, also identified as adrenaline. They are predominantly helpful for patients who have muscle tension, high blood pressure or suffer from stress. Side effects can include nightmares, hallucinations, tiredness, cold hands/feet, constipation, diarrhea and tummy upsets. Generally not used in people with asthma.
Examples of beta blockers include: Acebutolol (Sectral), Atenolol (Tenormin), Bisoprolol (Zebeta), Metoprolol (Lopressor, Toprol-XL) and Propranolol (Inderal LA, InnoPran XL)
Propranolol is effective in 65% people in the reduction of migraine headache frequency and intensity. Therefore, it is the most commonly used of this class of medications. It should be started at 20-30 mg daily in doses and increased steadily as high as 240 mg daily.
